IABSE Fellows and Young Engineers lunch in Nantes
Like every year, IABSE Fellows met our Young Engineers over lunch to share knowledge, to inspire each other and to interact. Where else do you get this opportunity – where young structural engineers, fresh out of their college or just starting on their jobs get to meet and discuss any issues concerning their career, with those who are in leading positions in top structural engineering companies around the world. IABSE’s 40th Symposium and Annual Meetings in Nantes: Few Glimpses

The 40th IABSE Symposium on ‘Tomorrow’s Megastructures’ organized by the French Group of IABSE, in cooperation with AFGC was a big success with over 575 delegates from 40 countries. Hosted in the beautiful city of Nantes, at the La Cite de Nantes Events Centre.

The Symposium’s Organizing Committee was chaired by Bruno Godart, and Christian Cremona chaired the Scientific Committee has received over 500 abstracts that featured 295 papers in the Technical Program. There were 6 keynote lectures from renowned speakers and 64 parallel sessions. Preceding the Symposium, from Sept. 17 -21 were the IABSE Annual Meetings and three Pre-Symposium Workshops on;

1. Structural Failures—cases, causes, investigations, lessons learned
2. Designing with UHPFRC based on most recent standard
3. Practice of Finite Elements Calculation

The presentation on Genoa bridge collapse by F. Palmisano, was a current topic and was well attended.

The Symposium has lived up to the high expectations of the participants. Exhibitors and participants enjoyed their small yet essential talks over ‘Standing Lunches’ served at the exhibition area and the fine French cuisine and wine during sophisticated yet fun social events.

Watch out for the Symposium article in the forthcoming issue of SEI with more photographs from the event.

Permanent Committee meeting during the IABSE Annual Meetings precedes Symposium.

Opening Ceremony started with welcome adresses from the Organizing Committee, followed by IABSE Awards and Keynote Lecture. Participants and Exhibitors enjoyed their small talks while having standing lunch at the Exhibition area.

Welcome Reception at "Les Machines" with an amazing array of mechanical animals and the walking elephant which stole the show. Gala Dinner at the Pigossière Castle.

Brian Duguid (representing Mott MacDonald) and others receiving the award, the Ordsall Chord project

Awarded: Brian Duguid, UK

Brian Duguid, UK, received the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Major Project Award for 2018 for the Ordsall Chord project.

AECOM and Mott MacDonald were designers for the scheme and are collective members of IABSE. Brian Duguid is an individual member of IABSE and a member of the UK group Executive Committee. The Ordsall Chord has been awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Major Project Award for 2018. Details of the project have been presented at IABSE Conferences in Bath, UK and Vancouver, Canada, and a paper has been submitted to SEI. The Ordsall Chord opened to railway traffic in December 2017.
