Fernando Branco is a full-time professor and former president of the Civil Engineering Dept., IST –University Lisbon.

‘Ignorance, Uncertainty and Human Errors in Structural Engineering’

 

Submission of abstracts until November 30, 2016

He left recently the Presidency of the European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) and he is currently partner of GATEWIT - Construction Information Technologies and of SACIV, Ld.- Civil Engineering Services. His fields of expertise are bridge design, maintenance and rehabilitation, and new materials, having been consultant for major Public Works such as the S. João Bridge, Vasco da Gama Bridge in Portugal and the Macau-Taipa Bridge, China. 

His main objectives as President are to develop the leading path of IABSE, to reach more people, to increase the network of its members and, essentially, to bring to the association young engineers. The plan to increase the network considers, among others, to make the National Groups of IABSE more dynamic, to increase their number, to invite world specialists to lead the creation of New Working Groups, and to put the Working Groups to produce more technical information, and also to reach the small countries where IABSE is not yet present. How can we encourage greater creativity and imagination in design? How can cutting edge research be used to influence design processes and outcomes? How can designers work together and collaborate more effectively in today's design context? How can we develop an innovation mindset in structural designers? The event will address these and other related questions exploring creativity and collaboration in the structural design process The Organising Committee for IABSE Bath 2017 is now inviting submissions of abstracts for the lecture format sessions and ideas for the seminar format sessions.

Inside SEI November 2016

The Kintai-kyo Bridge is a unique, five-span wooden bridge with three arches across the Nishiki River, Japan. The paper ‘Design and Periodic Inspection of the Kintai-kyo Wooden Arch Bridge’ by Sawako Tomioka and Teruhiko Yoda, studies the origin of the arch structure of the Kintai-kyo Bridge because this arch is unique and different from the voussoir arch or the corbel arch, and its resulting elegant appearance. WG10: Super Long Bridge Aerodynamics

This new IABSE Working Group’s main task is the definition of a standard to validate a software for the computation of bridge response to the wind turbulence. The WG met in September in Stockholm on occasion of the IABSE Annual Meetings and Symposium. The meeting was well attended with 15 members belonging to universities, laboratories, engineering societies, all involved in the most relevant ongoing projects of long span bridges attended. COWI - has been chosen to undertake the detailed design for the European Spallation Source, ESS, which will be home to a ground-breaking research facility; a neutron source with the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built. On September 8, 2016, built environment professionals gathered for the 10th IABSE British Group Future of Design event in London. Aimed at promoting innovation and collaboration to young designers, attendees were treated to a day full of inspiration, creativity and discussion. Zagreb Joint Workshop 2017

The Joint Zagreb Workshop, (March 2-3, 2017) of COST Action TU 1402, COST Action TU 1406 and IABSE Working Commission 1, is taking shape. The Scientific Committee is currently revising manuscripts received. Four important Keynote Speakers, James L. Beck and Dan M. Frangopol from USA, Ho-Kyung Kim, South Korea, and Hitoshi Furuta from Japan have accepted to give a presentation. The registration fee for this event is only 80 Euros and is open until December 20, 2016. More..
