Reflections on the 2017 IABSE Future of Design Conference in NYC
On April 29, 2017, the first IABSE Future of Design conference in New York City was a refreshing day of optimism and energy. Lee Franck, launched the morning session by describing the organizing committee’s motivations to create a forum to celebrate “why we do what we do, what drives us as designers, and [what values we strive for].” To fulfill that mission, the conference brought together a diverse group of established and emerging talent in the fields of engineering, architecture, computation, fabrication, and art. The conference kicked off with a vibrant set of “10 + 10 Talks,” in which structural engineers paired up with professionals in a field slightly different from their own. Each pair gave a joint presentation on their thoughts on the “future of design.” Read the report by Hubert Chang and Jasmin Sadegh here..
