Members of IABSE may propose nominations for the following IABSE Awards by contacting the Chair of their National Group by December 15, 2018. The Chairs will then submit their proposals to IABSE Secretariat.

Young Engineers Colloquium, East Asia

The Young Engineers Colloquium took place in Tongji University, China, was a joint event organized by three IABSE National Groups of China, Japan and Korea, which offered young engineers the opportunity to present interesting researches, projects or construction practices to fellow structural engineers and researchers.

There were 50 participants, Keynote lecture presented by Naeem Ullah Hussain, 22 Presentations and four technical tours in Shanghai: Wind Tunnel Lab of SLDRCE, Tongji University Museum, The Bund, and Boat Tour for bridges over Huangpu River.

The Best Paper Award with a cash prize of 2,000 CNY was awarded to Kun Xu from Beijing University of Technology, Doyun Hwang from Seoul National University, and Yusuke Takahashi from Osaka Institute of Technology. More information, Click Here!

50th Anniversary!

The Portugese Group of IABSE (APEE) is celebrating their 50th Anniversary with a conference on December 5, 2018, which will also include a keynote lecture by Prof. Fabrizio Palmisano, Italy, on the topic: “ The Genoa bridge collapse: background and state of the art of the investigation” This event will be held at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering.

Presenting IABSE to
China-Croatia Forum

Croatian NG Chair, Ana Mandic Ivankovic described her experience in IABSE in a presentation at the China-Croatia Higher Education Institution Forum organized by the Ministry of Science and Education of Republic of Croatia, where she also mentioned that the newly elected president of the IABSE from 2019 is Prof.Dr. Yaojun Ge from Tongji University, China.

Denmark

October 31, 2018

Mini seminar – Bridge Construction Methods

The Danish Group of IABSE hosted a seminar on Bridge Construction Methods, at the Frederikssund Fjord Link bridge construction site and offered the opportunity to visit the construction site itself.

The seminar presented the construction methods used on the two major bridge construction projects currently ongoing in Denmark – The New Storstrøm Bridge and the Frederikssund Fjord Link. The topic of the seminar was the Contractors considerations and approach to detailed design and construction methodology. The seminar had close to 90 participants and included participation from IABSE Italy, IABSE Norway as well as IABSE Denmark.

The Spanish Group of IABSE organized this event in collaboration with the Technical University of Madrid on November 15-16, 2018.

Milne Medal

On November 13, in London, IABSE BG Milne Medal winner, WSP's John Parker, delivered his lecture: "An Unexpected Education".
He explored how engineers adapt to unusual challenges and in doing so pick up new understandings.

Diego Padilla Philipps (WSP) won the ‘Nethercot Paper Award’ for his paper “22 Bishopsgate”.

Workshop on “Inspection, Investigation and Repair/Rehabilitation of Bridges and Flyovers” to be held at Chennai, India. 

This Workshop intends to provide insights into the probable causes of damage/distress and available methods and techniques of their repair and rehabilitation to enhance their serviceability during the design life. It also covers the aspects of detailed inspection, investigation and testing.

The Dutch Group of IABSE shall conduct a Seminar 'Connect High-Rise Buildings in the NL'. The purpose of this seminar will be to provide Dutch engineers from academia and practice the latest knowledge about high rise buildings in the NL and also to enhance network with practitioners.

Official Opening of 'Sora Giuvna' – the second
Hinterrhein Bridge in Switzerland

A new bridge serving the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) in eastern Switzerland was officially opened on October 18, 2018. COWI (IABSE’s Collective Member), is proud to be partners in providing concept and detailed design of the new bridge in joint venture with WaltGalmarini AG. The 200m long bridge with a 63m main span will carry a single-track railway over the Hinterrhein (Posterior Rhine) River and A13 highway, improving journey frequency on both the Chur - St. Moritz, and Chur - Disentis-Muster routes.

Kienlesberg Bridge in Ulm opens

Design team Knight Architects (IABSE Collective Member) with Krebs und Kiefer is glad to announce the opening of the new landmark bridge in Ulm, Germany. The 270m-long crossing will be the keystone in Ulm’s new ‘Line 2’ network providing a north‐south connection linking the city centre with the university and a business park.

The fib is delighted to announce that Jean-François Klein (IABSE Member, posthumous), Giuseppe Mancini (IABSE Member) and Rudy Ricciotti, were awarded the fib Freyssinet Medal, which recognises outstanding technical contributions in the field of structural concrete.
