Copenhagen 2018
Conference successfully conducted! 

This conference was organized by the Danish Group of IABSE in cooperation with the Technical University of Denmark to share experience and knowledge, based on operation and maintenance of bridges and other civil engineering structures, and to provide a platform for discussion to owners, operators, designers, researchers, contractors and suppliers. As shown in photo (bottom), Alex-Manuel Muresan won the Young Engineers Contribution Award.

Honorary Membership 
The Honorary Membership is presented to an Individual Member of IABSE, for exceptionally great services rendered to the Association.

International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering 
The Award was established in 1975 to underline the importance of the work done by engineers, by highlighting examples of particular significance. It will be conferred for outstanding contributions in the field of structural engineering, with special reference to their usefulness to society.

IABSE Prize
The IABSE Prize was established in 1982 to honour an IABSE member early in his/her career, forty years of age or younger for an outstanding achievement in the field of structural engineering, in Research, Design or Construction.

Outstanding Structure Award winner
The IABSE Outstanding Structure Award (OStrA) was established in 1998. It is one of the highest distinctions awarded by IABSE and recognises, in different regions of the world, some of the most remarkable, innovative, creative, or otherwise stimulating structures, but not necessarily the largest, longest, highest, or otherwise record-breaking structures. Sustainability and respect of the environment is also an important factor.

Outstanding Paper Award

October 24-25, 2018: IABSE Young Engineers Colloquium in East Asia, Tongji University, Shanghai, China

This Colloquium offers young engineers (under about 35 years of age) the opportunity to present interesting projects from university, research or construction practice to an audience of fellow structural engineers. Please submit a two page-paper for research and project report including a short Curriculum Vitae using our template and the application form by August 31, 2018.

June 12, 2018: Workshop SBRI+ Valorisation of Knowledge for Sustainable Steel - Composite Bridges in Built Environment, Croatia

The Workshop was organised by the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Civil Engineering. The workshop has been organised in two parts. The workshop was very successful and the participants agreed that the holistic approach for analysing the life-cycle design of bridges presented in the workshop is an important theme.

Switzerland

June 8-9, 2018:
Group Visit

The Swiss Group met in the canton of Ticino and visited a bridge in the south of Gotthard Base Tunnel and two rail viaducts between Lugano and Bellinzona. They also visited Calancasca valley where they discovered a church, an arch bridge by professor Christian Menn and the Tibetan footbridge “Carasc”.

May 24, 2018: ‘Vancouver - Engineering the Future’

This seminar included a selection of the Dutch and Belgian contributions to the Vancouver symposium 2017. The following topics were covered: structures and architecture, landmark bridges, arch buckling, hybrid structures, fibre reinforced polymer structures, robustness, reliability, existing bridges, proof load testing, strengthening and fatigue.

Question: It is certainly a good idea to replace a long exposed coastal road with a series of offshore bridges. However, there are problems… Prof. Dr. Joerg Schneider, Switzerland.
