IABSE Kuala Lumpur 2018
'Engineering the Developing World'
Report by Paul Mullins, Chair, Organizing Committee

A total of 260 delegates, from 37 different countries, attended the IABSE Spring conference, themed ‘Engineering the Developing World’, held in Kuala Lumpur from 25-27 April, 2018. There were in excess of 150 papers presented covering a wide range of subjects, with a further six keynote speakers. As well as the technical part of the conference, there was an entertaining social programme that unfolded over the three days beginning with the Young Engineer and Ice-Breaker parties on the eve of the first day. Following the conference events on the first day, ALLPLAN hosted the cocktail party, which was attended by many of the delegates. The gala dinner was held at Strato Restaurant, in the Troika building only a short walk from the conference venue, where thankfully the rain held off and delegates were able to walk in the warm KL evening heat. Delegates were able to enjoy the panoramic views of the city from the 23rd floor vantage point.

Structural Engineering International, May 2018:
Recent Structures and Research in France

Nantes, France, will host the 40th IABSE Symposium with the main theme of 'Tomorrow’s Megastructures'. Popularised in the 1960s as an architectural concept, a megastructure is referring to a very large manmade object, though the limits of precisely how large this is, varies considerably. The term could be applied to any especially large or tall building, but also to enormous self-supporting artificial constructions. In anticipation of this event, the current SEI Special Issue includes a collection of papers highlighting recent structures and research in France. Both bridge, building and railway projects from across France are represented, comprising both new construction and the retrofitting of existing structures.

This Special issue’s Chief Reviewer was Ann Schumacher and Guest Chief Reviewer was Bruno Godart, Chair, Organizing Committee, IABSE Nantes Symposium. The Editorial for this SEI issue is by the Chair of Technical Committee, Daia Zwicky.

SEI May issue has been printed and posted, it is also available online on Taylor & Francis's website: Click here!

The skills required by structural engineer in the past were always well defined and remained mainly within the technical domain, however the situation has now changed.
