Report

IABSE's 1st Online Conference was a 2-Day Single-Track online conference that took place on 2-3 September 2020, on Zoom Webinar Platform. The Conference was inaugurated by Prof. H-M Koh (Co-Chair of Organizing Committee), and followed by a Welcome Address by Prof. Y. Ge (President of IABSE, Co-Chair of the Organizing Committee), and an introduction by Prof. Limin Sun (Co-Chair of Scientific Committee).

The programme consisted of four Keynote sessions and four Topic sessions, with 16 invited speakers. The Conference attracted 330 registered international participants and almost 900 local daily viewers on an online channel with a Chinese translation in China.

This conference was a collective initiative of the Chinese, Japanese and the Korean Group of IABSE to financially support IABSE during this pandemic. It was offered FREE to all IABSE members and for a nominal fee to non-members including free membership to young engineer participants.

We are proud that this pilot online Conference received very good feedback from the participants despite the challenging hours for participants from Europe, US and other parts of the world. Read the complete report of this Conference in the upcoming SEI November 2020 issue. www.iabse.org/Online2020

IABSE would like to give a big thank you to the Chinese, Japanese and the Korean National Groups, the PCO - Bridge Magazine, participants, and to all the sponsors for making this Conference a big success!

Feedback received from Brazil, from Prof. Flavio Barbosa (IABSE Member):

"IABSE provided an important forum to discuss the post COVID-19 world situation, with multidisciplinary regards and expectations about this topic. Technical sections addressing the subject helped to understand the theme and its impacts on the construction and design of structures, as well as the need to adapt to existing ones. Especially for Latin America in general, it became evident that it was necessary to look for different or complementary alternatives to those that have been taken in countries in other regions in the face of COVID-19, due to a different reality with less financial resources and higher levels of inequality."

IABSE TG3.6: Artificial Intelligence in Architecture, Engineering and Construction
Submit your presentation proposal by 1 October 2020.

March 24-25, 2021, Virtual Conference

2020 event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the work for AI in AEC conference 2021, Helsinki, March 24-25, 2021 www.aiaec.net continues by the organizing committee having some of the members from the Task Group. The high international interest towards the 2020 event, showed that AEC industry has clear lack of this kind of global conference. Our industry is now ready to take the next step in AI deployment and move from building the foundation towards creating the value from data and AI.

SEI Special issue on Dynamics and Aerodynamics of Slender Structures - Abstract Submission Ongoing - Extended till October 15!

Dynamic and aerodynamic studies have been occupying an increasing space in the design, analysis and characterization of slender structures. Leveraged by enormous advancements in computational resources, storage capacities and data transmission bandwidths, digitalization has supported new approaches to modelling, simulation and visualization of dynamic effects on structures. This has facilitated the optimized use of materials, shapes and systems in radically new designs. The characterization of different types of complex dynamic actions (wind, pedestrian, traffic), the rigorous numerical analysis of their effects, but also the identification of the structural condition through dynamic response measurements of aged structures have seen considerable developments in the last few years. Read further description here.

IABSE Future of Design NYC 2020, 15-29 September 2020

US Group of IABSE presents Future of Design NYC for the fourth time in September 2020.  The theme of Future of Design NYC 2020 is Acceleration & Deceleration. Designers and related built environment professionals are often caught between the fast-paced flexibility that a project demands and the slow pace of change of industry practices.  This year’s program will evaluate the effects of acceleration on the built environment and on designing with social responsibility; it will also explore ideas and innovative practices that developed as a result of - or in an attempt to better harness - those shifts. It will approach these issues from perspectives of both engineering and architecture, in order to contextualize designers’ voices in transformative built environment initiatives. FoDNYC 2020 will occur as a series of 5 events hosted online, from September 15th - 29th. Check our website and social media (Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn) as we provide updates on program sessions and speakers.
